Fast, silly A-or-B choices — movement optional, zero prep possible, no personal stories required.

Run sheet: Opening Script → 15-Minute Session → Redirect Scripts. On your first run, skim Setup and the pair menu if you want print support.

15-minute night-one warm-up for the whole cabin. Default age band 10–15; seated/thumbs mode always OK.

Words in this session: Pass is OK · This or that · Opt-in disclosure

Why This Works

Core message: Binary choices reduce anxiety. Nobody sits in a hot seat, and movement wakes up a tired cabin.

Why night one

Campers arrive tired, shy, or wired. This or That gives instant participation without a sharing circle. Pass counts as participation.

Youth development move: Preferences are low-stakes identity practice — campers learn names and norms without revealing private stories.

Pitch to Fellow Counselors

Sell: Zero vulnerability, instant energy, works in any cabin layout.

Watch for: Pairs that accidentally exclude or shame — swap on the fly.

Pair with: Human Bingo if you have ~35 minutes total — trim to 6–8 pairs (~10 min) first.

When to use

  • First 10–15 minutes after cabin rules + names
  • Rain plan inside cabin
  • Before Human Bingo as an energy lift
  • Younger or anxious group before any writing/card activity

When not to use alone

If you have 25+ minutes on night one and no follow-up activity planned, add Human Bingo or Camp Mix & Match — this guide alone may feel too short.

Group Plan: Whole Cabin

Default: one circle — all 7 campers + 3 counselors. Optional split into two sides of the room (not breakout groups).

  • Lead counselor: reads pairs aloud
  • Other counselors: watch edges and inclusion
  • Camper layout: one circle or two lines facing each other
  • Movement: 2 counselors mark A side / B side of room — campers walk to choice; sit if mobility need
  • Seated: pass optional — thumbs left/right or stand/sit in chair
Not small SEL groups: This is a whole-cabin warm-up. Do not split into three breakout tables like the 45-minute SQUAD sessions.

Safety Checklist

Core rule: No pairs about weight, appearance, family money, religion, or dating. If a pair excludes someone, add: "Pass on this one is OK."

Setup Walkthrough

Light prep — most cabins can run verbal-only. Optional print helps EF support.

Best prep: 10 minutes before campers arrive

No-Prep Fallback

If you did not prepare in advance, run the verbal-only version.

Tradeoff: No print means counselors read pairs from this guide or the card menu. Keep to 8–10 pairs and use thumbs or stand/sit.

Opening Script

"This is called This or That. It's a quick warm-up — not a test, not homework."

"I'll say two choices. You pick the one that's more you right now, or pick pass — pass is always OK."

"You can move to a side of the room, hold up a sign, or just point. You do not have to explain your pick."

"Rules: be kind, no making fun of someone's choice, no pushing people to pick a side."

15-Minute Camper Session

Use the timer if helpful. It saves nothing outside this device.

Facilitation Timer
45:00

Use this as a rough guide, not a rigid rule.

  1. 0–2
    Roll call + frame

Names + rules from opening script. Repeat: pass is always OK.

  2. 2–12
    This or That rounds

8–12 pairs; movement or seated. Before round 5, repeat pass language.

  3. 12–14
    Silly finale

One low-stakes pair the whole group can laugh about together.

  4. 14–15
    Close + headcount

Closing line; count campers. No share circle.

Detailed Activity Walkthrough

  1. Lead counselor stands where both sides can see.
  2. Read pair → count "3, 2, 1 — show your pick!"
  3. Glance for isolated camper → "Pass is OK" or co-counselor stands near them.
  4. Mid-session (before round 5): repeat "Pass is always OK — point, move, or pass."
  5. Do 8–12 pairs in 15 minutes (~1 min per pair with movement). If you plan Human Bingo next, limit to 6–8 pairs (~10 min).
  6. Skip pairs that fall flat; do not read all 20 if time is short.
  7. Close with headcount — no share circle.

Executive-Function Supports

Use these supports for everyone. Do not make them look like accommodations for one camper.

Core principle: Limit pairs, use Now/Next language, and keep pass visible every few rounds.
Limit pairs first

Start with 8 pairs from one category (Camp or Fun). Add more only if energy stays positive.

Counselor line: "Pick one side, point, or pass — all three count."

Use step cards
  1. 1
    Listen — hear both choices.
  2. 2
Pick — move, point, or pass.
  3. 3
    Respect — no teasing.
  4. 4
    Repeat — next pair!
Offer low-demand roles

Options: official A counter, sign holder, pair picker, edge watcher.

Counselor line: "You can pass every round and still help — hold the sign or count picks."

Redirect Scripts

Camper teases someone's choice

"We don't joke about picks. Reset — pass is OK on the next one."

Camper refuses every round

"Pass counts. Want to be the official counter for how many pick A?"

Camper overshares why they picked

"Thanks — you don't have to explain. Next pair!"

One side empty (camper alone)

"You're good — pass or pick what feels closest. No wrong answer."

Pair feels exclusive

"Let's skip that one — new pair coming."

Camper dominates / yells choices

"Quick picks only — I'll hear from someone who hasn't moved yet."

Energy too high

Switch to seated thumbs for 3 rounds.

Homesickness or tears

"You can pass and sit with a counselor — no explaining needed."

Debrief + Close

Counselor-only reflection — no camper circle debrief on night one.

Roster hook: Note one connection or preference per camper on your cabin roster for tomorrow.

Closing line to campers: "Tomorrow we'll learn more names. Tonight was just hello."
